After years of neglect, the Detroit Opera House was beautifully restored in 1996, when the nomadic Michigan Opera Theatre decided to transform the former Capitol Theater into a permanent home. With the oversight of Michigan Opera Theatre general director Dr. David DiChiera, the Detroit Opera House was marvelously restored. Today, the Detroit Opera House is home to Michigan Opera Theatre, and the Detroit home to many of the world’s best dance companies, Broadway shows and concerts. The goal was to restore the building to be as historically accurate to the original Capitol as possible. Repairing or replacing the terra cotta facade on the Broadway side of the building alone was a huge project.

According to Sun columnist Earl E. Buie, in one of his “They Tell Me” columns in 1958, the Opera House’s seating capacity was between 1,200 and 1,400. He noted on the really big nights the house sold out days in advance. Registering for the event only guarantees you the NFL draft footprint in downtown Detroit. Restaurants and retail are beginning to come back, as well, bringing more foot traffic and more people back to downtown. The renovation of a dilapidated old movie theater in what was a depreciated and unseemly part of town may not have been the cause of all of this redevelopment and renewed activity. Since the founding of the MOT in 1971, the company has produced many top-rate operas but never had a theater it could call its own, putting on productions at Music Hall, the Fisher Theatre and the Masonic Temple throughout its history. It took many months for DiChiera and the MOT board to come to the decision to buy the building and then more months in order to close the deal.
In its first five years of business, the Capitol presented programs featuring first-run films supported by live performances by the theater’s house orchestra, the Capitol Wonder Orchestra, led by Eduard Werner. The Capitol Wonder Orchestra, a smaller orchestra than the Detroit Symphony, featuring 35 to 40 players, played a vital role in each program, playing classical numbers and backing well-known local singers and dance bands. Catlin goes on to describe the beginnings of the motion picture business in Detroit. In the first years of the 20th century, small vacant shops downtown were converted into pop-up theaters showing short picture reels. Detroit’s first proper movie theater, The Casino, opened in 1906, on Monroe Street.

Calaf rushes to strike the gong, thereby declaring his intention to pursue Turandot, but Ping, Pang and Pong, the Emperor’s ministers, intervene. When the color is touch dry, take a damp sponge and carefully wipe away the color on the surface of the clay surrounding the carving. Once the underglaze and shaving foam has been applied, let the mixture settle on the surface for a minute or two.

Once covered, you can let the bubbles burst in their own time. This seems to be because the bisque is very absorbent and soaks up water. As a result, the image seems to stick to the bisque more easily. Then carefully remove the tissue paper with a needle tool and your fingertips and allow the image to dry. Hold the image up against your pottery, with the dull side of the tissue paper facing outwards. Sticky stencils can be effective if you have a detailed design.
